I am sure everyone on this platform knows one way or another about the current situation that is happening in Venezuela, you guys probably have seen everything, from police brutality and repression to starving people eating out of thrash bags but there's more than that and it's a topic that doesn't seem to be discussed as much. In the south east of Venezuela, in the Bolivar state, probably since Maduro took over in 2013 illegal mining has been rampant because no one is enforcing the law there.
This illegal mining situation has destroyed the habitats of dozens of species of macaws, these beautiful birds have found no other alternative other than migrating to "safer" places since their lively hoods have been completely destroyed, from extremely polluted rivers and water sources to massive deforestation caused by illegal activities. Some of these amazing birds eventually found their way to Caracas, the capital of the country. Caracas already had a relatively healthy population of Macaws but they where mostly of the blue and green variants but people eventually started to notice more and more red and other colors flying around in the city causing this while destroyed habitat situation to go public.
The issue is what should have been a happy outcome for them little cute birds may have sealed their fate because they migrated from their destroyed homes into a literal hunting ground, a lot of people still respect and feel for these birds by feeding them and caring for them but a lot of people lately have taken advantage of their highly trusting behaviour towards humans and are luring them with food, capturing them and eating them since it's the only available source of meat they can get.
I'm not going to down a moral rabbit hole and defend or attack someone for trying to survive and feed their children but I find this situation to be quite sad and I hope we manage to get out of this situation before driving their entire species to extinction… It wouldn't be the first time animal species pay the price for human socialism/communism.
Also these are not the only little creatures being killed and consumed en masse by hungry people, other animals like iguanas, capybaras, snakes and even rats are being cornered on a day to day basis and being killed for food by people who have had their lives destroyed by the policies of a failed government.
